What is a UPI QR code and how does it work

A UPI QR code is a QR code that stores an NPCI URL payload such as upi://pay?pa=merchant@upi&pn=ShopName&am=100&cu=INR&tn=Bill. Any supported UPI app can read this format and open a payment screen already filled with your VPA, optional payee name, INR amount and transaction note. The customer checks the details and then approves the transfer. The NPCI URL format is supported by major UPI apps on Android and iPhone in India.

Add your logo, brand colours and AI-generated designs so the code suits a kirana counter, restaurant table stand, auto-rickshaw dashboard, shagun envelope, tuition fee slip, temple donation box, subscription insert, B2B invoice header or NRI business card. Print it on counter stickers, table stands, dashboard cards, gift envelopes, fee reminders, donation sleeves, packaging inserts or invoice headers. UPI QR codes store the NPCI payment payload directly in the pattern, so they work with Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon Pay, BHIM and bank UPI apps once printed.

Turn any UPI VPA into a QR code in 3 steps

Copy your UPI VPA from a bank app or merchant dashboard, customise the code with your logo and AI-generated designs, then download it in PNG, SVG or PDF for counters, table stands or invoice headers.

  1. Step 1

    Choose your UPI VPA

Copy your UPI VPA, such as yourname@oksbi, business@paytm or shop@ybl, from your bank UPI app or merchant onboarding dashboard. You can also add a payee name, a fixed INR amount and a transaction note in line with the NPCI URL specification.

  2. Step 2

    Customise the UPI QR

Add your logo, brand colours and pixel patterns. Choose from 1200+ templates or generate QR Art to match your shop counter, restaurant table stand, auto-rickshaw dashboard, shagun envelope or invoice header.

  3. Step 3

    Print and display

Export in PNG, SVG or PDF. Print on shop counters, table stands, dashboards, gift envelopes, fee slips, donation boxes, packaging inserts or invoice headers. Test with Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm before full production.

Frequently asked questions about UPI payment QR codes

Taking UPI payments at your counter with QR codes.

A UPI QR code stores your VPA using the NPCI URL specification so customers can scan and pay from a supported UPI app. Copy your UPI VPA from your bank app or merchant dashboard, then paste it into QR Code AI. You can also add a payee name, a fixed INR amount and a transaction note. Customise the design with your logo, brand colours and AI-generated designs, then download it in PNG, SVG or PDF for counters, restaurants, auto-rickshaws or invoices.

Yes. The NPCI UPI URL specification supports a pre-filled amount through the &am= parameter, for example upi://pay?pa=user@bank&am=500 for ₹500. Enter your VPA, payee name and optional amount in QR Code AI, and the generator builds the payment URL for you. When the code is scanned, supported UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon Pay, BHIM and bank apps open the payment screen with the amount already filled in.

Yes. UPI payment QR codes are free to create with QR Code AI. You can customise them with your logo, brand colours and AI-designed templates, then download them in PNG, SVG or PDF without watermarks. You can also add a fixed INR amount before export so the payment value is pre-filled. UPI payment codes are static, so the encoded payment details stay fixed once printed.

UPI is rolling out internationally to the UAE, Singapore, France, the UK, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius, letting NRIs pay India-side merchants directly from foreign bank accounts where UPI is supported. Tourists without a UPI-linked account usually cannot complete the payment by scanning it. For cross-border use, many businesses place a UPI code alongside another payment option such as PayPal so both domestic and international customers have a suitable route to pay.

A UPI QR code is the right choice for domestic payments in India because it opens supported UPI apps with your VPA already filled in. A Pix Payment QR is designed for Brazilian banking rails, while a PayPal QR is better suited to international card and bank payments. Choose UPI for India-based counters, add PayPal for cross-border invoices or NRI audiences, and use Pix only if you serve both India and Brazil.
