What is a location QR code and how it works

A location QR code is a QR code that stores either a geo URI as defined in RFC 5870 (geo:48.8566,2.3522) or a Google Maps URL. Scan it with any phone camera and the default map app opens with the pin already loaded for directions. This format works well for venues, delivery points and property sites. Geo URI works offline in the default map app on iOS or Android. A Google Maps URL needs internet, but it can show the place name and reviews. The Google Maps Platform documentation explains shareable map link formats. On Apple devices, the Apple Maps URL scheme explains how map deep links open in the Maps app.

Add your logo, brand colours and AI-generated designs so the code matches your event flyer, venue ticket, property board or trail marker. Print it on directional signs, tickets, yard boards and trail posts to guide visitors, drivers or guests. Geo URI QR codes store the coordinates directly in the pixel pattern, so the data stays fixed in the printed code and opens in compatible default map apps. Use decimal-degree format such as 40.7128, -74.0060 for the widest parsing support.

Turn any coordinate or address into a location QR in 3 steps

Choose geo URI or a Google Maps URL, customise the QR code with your logo and AI-generated designs, then download it in PNG, SVG or PDF for signs, tickets, yard boards or trail markers.

  1. Step 1

Choose geo URI or Google Maps URL

Pick between geo URI (offline, default map apps, RFC 5870) and a Google Maps URL (online, Google-specific, place name and reviews). Use decimal-degree format such as 40.7128, -74.0060 for the best parsing compatibility.

  2. Step 2

    Customise the location QR

Add your logo, brand colours and pixel patterns. Choose from 1200+ templates or generate QR Code Art to match your event flyer, venue ticket, yard board or trail marker style.

  3. Step 3

    Print and share

Export in PNG for screens, SVG for print or PDF for layered design files. Print on directional signs, tickets, yard boards, job-site cards, drop-point markers or tourism brochures. Test the scan first on iOS and Android to confirm the map app opens properly.

Frequently asked questions about Location QR codes

Sharing a location as a QR code that opens a map pin in one tap.

A location QR code is a scannable code that opens a geographic point on a map after scanning. To create one in QR Code AI, enter latitude and longitude in decimal-degree format such as 40.7128, -74.0060, or paste a Google Maps URL. QR Code AI encodes either the geo URI based on RFC 5870 or the map URL. You can then add your logo and AI-generated designs and download it in PNG, SVG or PDF.

A location QR code uses the geo URI format from RFC 5870, written as geo:lat, lng, and can work with the default map app, including in lower-connectivity situations. A Google Maps QR code stores a maps.google.com URL, so it needs internet access but can show the place name, business listing and reviews. Choose geo URI for outdoor use or patchy signal areas, and choose Google Maps URLs when reviews and listing details matter more.

Yes. Location QR codes are free on QR Code AI. You can generate them, customise them with your logo, brand colours and AI-designed templates, and download them in PNG, SVG or PDF without watermarks. Native location QR codes are static by design, so the coordinates are stored directly in the code itself. If you need editing or QR code tracking later, use a URL-based QR instead.

A native geo URI QR code stores the coordinates permanently inside the encoded image, so it cannot be changed after printing. If you want to update the destination later, create a URL QR that points to a Google Maps share link or a hosted landing page, then edit that destination from your dashboard. Use a URL QR for changing venues or seasonal locations, and use geo URI for permanent markers.

A Location QR stores a geo URI based on RFC 5870 directly in the pixel pattern, so it opens a compatible default map app with the pin ready. A Google Maps shared link works through Google Maps online and can show the place name and reviews. A vCard QR saves contact details such as name, phone, email and address, but it does not navigate to coordinates. Choose Location QR for map navigation, and pair it with vCard on property boards when you want both contact saving and routing.
