What is a UPI QR code and how does it work

A UPI QR code is a QR code that stores an NPCI URL payload such as upi://pay?pa=merchant@upi&pn=ShopName&am=100&cu=INR&tn=Bill. When someone scans it in any UPI-enabled app, the payment screen opens with your VPA, optional payee name, INR amount and note already filled in. The customer checks the details and approves the payment. This is a practical way to turn a UPI ID into a scannable payment code that works across major UPI apps on Android and iPhone in India.

You can add your logo, brand colours and AI-generated designs so the code suits a kirana counter, restaurant table stand, auto-rickshaw dashboard, shagun envelope, tuition fee slip, temple donation box, subscription insert, B2B invoice header or NRI-facing business card. Print it on counter stickers, table tents, dashboard cards, gift envelopes, fee reminders, donation sleeves, packaging inserts or invoice headers. The UPI QR stores the NPCI payment payload directly in the pattern, so it works with Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon Pay, BHIM and bank UPI apps after printing.

Turn Any UPI VPA into a QR Code in 3 Steps

Copy your UPI VPA from any bank app or merchant dashboard, customise the code with your logo and AI-generated designs, then download it in PNG, SVG or PDF for counters, table tents or invoice headers.

  1. Step 1

    Choose your UPI VPA

Copy your UPI VPA such as yourname@oksbi, business@paytm or shop@ybl from your bank UPI app or merchant onboarding dashboard. You can also add the payee name, a fixed INR amount and a transaction note as per the NPCI URL specification.

  2. Step 2

    Customise the UPI QR

Add your logo, brand colours and pixel patterns. Choose from 1200+ templates or generate QR Art to match your shop counter, restaurant table stand, auto-rickshaw dashboard, shagun envelope or invoice header.

  3. Step 3

    Print and display

Export in PNG, SVG or PDF. Print on shop counters, table tents, dashboards, gift envelopes, fee slips, donation boxes, packaging inserts or invoice headers. Test it on Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm before full-scale printing.

Frequently asked questions about UPI payment QR codes

Accepting UPI payments at your counter with QR codes.

A UPI QR code stores your VPA in the NPCI URL format so customers can scan and pay through any supported UPI app. Copy your UPI VPA from your bank app or merchant dashboard, then paste it into QR Code AI. You can also add the payee name, a fixed INR amount and a transaction note. After that, customise the design with your logo and colours, download it in PNG, SVG or PDF, and print it for counters, tables, vehicles or invoices.

Yes. A UPI QR code can include a pre-filled amount using the am parameter in the NPCI payment URL, such as upi://pay?pa=user@bank&am=500 for ₹500. Enter your VPA, payee name and optional amount in QR Code AI, and the tool will generate the payment QR for you. When scanned, supported UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon Pay, BHIM and bank apps open with the amount already filled in.

Yes. UPI payment QR codes are free to create on QR Code AI. You can generate the code, add your logo, brand colours and AI-designed templates, then download it in PNG, SVG or PDF without watermarks. Because this format is static, the payment details are encoded directly into the QR itself, which makes it reliable for printing on counters, invoices, donation boxes and fee slips.

A UPI QR code can be scanned by NRIs and international users only when their bank or payment app supports UPI access. UPI is expanding to markets such as UAE, Singapore, France, the UK, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius, which helps some users pay Indian merchants directly. Foreign tourists without a UPI-linked account usually cannot complete the payment. For broader coverage, many businesses place a UPI QR alongside another global payment QR.

A UPI QR code is the right choice for domestic payments in India because it opens supported UPI apps with your VPA already filled in. Pix Payment QR is meant for Brazilian banking rails, while PayPal QR is better suited to international card and bank payments with currency conversion. Choose UPI QR for Indian counters and invoices. Add PayPal QR for NRI or overseas customers, and use Pix only if your business serves both India and Brazil.
