UPC-E Barcode Generator

Build a compact UPC-E symbol from a compatible product identifier

What is a UPC-E barcode?

UPC-E is a compact barcode representation for eligible UPC numbers. It uses zero suppression to represent a compatible UPC-A number in a smaller symbol. Not every UPC-A number qualifies. This editor expects the full 8-digit UPC-E input: a number-system digit, six data digits and the final check digit. See the GS1 General Specifications for the underlying format.

When a product already has an approved UPC-E identifier, copy the complete value into the editor and compare it with the product record. Do not type an arbitrary six-digit SKU or remove zeros yourself. Test the scanner's output in your receiving software, because scanner settings can expand UPC-E to UPC-A.

How to create a UPC-E barcode

Enter the data, check the symbol and test the downloaded label in the workflow where it will be scanned.

  1. Step 1

    Enter the correct data

Enter the complete 8-digit UPC-E value with its number-system and check digits. Use a compatible assigned identifier; do not manually shorten a UPC-A number.

  2. Step 2

    Review the symbol and contrast

Choose a dark foreground on a lighter background. Keep the built-in quiet zones and add padding if needed. Review the preview and resolve validation or scannability errors.

  3. Step 3

    Download and test a label

Choose PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG, PDF or EPS. Preserve proportions and clear margins in your layout, then scan a printed sample with the intended reader and compare the returned data.

Prepare your UPC-E label for its destination

Check your data, preserve clear margins and choose the right file for your label.

Check both the compact and scanned values

A scanner may report the expanded UPC-A value, depending on its settings. Confirm the expected output with your receiving system before printing labels, and keep the product assignment consistent.

Keep clear margins

The generator preserves required quiet zones around the symbol. Keep these areas clear in your layout, and test a printed sample at its intended size with the scanner you will use.

Choose your export format

Download SVG, PDF or EPS vectors, or PNG, JPG or WebP images. Every export is checked against the saved data; test the final print on its intended material too. Compare the six barcode download formats in our guide.

Distinguish UPC-E from EAN-8

This editor uses eight digits for a complete UPC-E value, but eight digits alone do not identify the barcode format. UPC-E represents an eligible UPC number; EAN-8 uses an assigned GTIN-8. Choose the format from the product's identifier record rather than from its length.

Account for the curve of a small container

On a small cylindrical container, the barcode's orientation affects how much of the symbol a reader can see. GS1 recommends a vertical, ladder orientation for this package shape. Plan the position with your printer so the curve does not hide the full width of the barcode.

UPC-E vs UPC-A: input and scanner output

QR Code AI checks the full eight-digit UPC-E entry, including its supported number system and compression rules. Compare UPC-E with UPC-A before deciding what your scanner should send to the product catalogue. Select an icon or underlined label for details.

QR Code AI keeps the required quiet zone and offers native SVG, PDF and EPS artwork for a compact label. The final-file decode check compares the download with the saved value and format; it does not configure how a receiving scanner reports UPC-E.

A smaller symbol does not create a new product identifier. Do not enter an arbitrary six-digit SKU or delete zeros yourself. The eight-digit input described here is QR Code AI’s input contract. See GS1 US barcode-type explanation; the receiving scanner’s configuration determines how the value is delivered.

UPC-E barcode questions

Input, printing and saved barcode behaviour

This editor expects eight digits: the number-system digit, six data digits and a check digit. It supports number systems 0 and 1. Enter the complete UPC-E value and review any correction against the assigned identifier.

No. UPC-E uses specific zero-suppression rules, so only compatible UPC-A numbers can be represented this way. Do not delete zeros or other digits to force a number into a shorter field.

Some scanners expand UPC-E to its corresponding UPC-A value. Check the scanner's output configuration and the number format expected by your software. A longer decoded value can reflect that configuration rather than a different product.

Yes. QR Code AI offers SVG, PDF and EPS vector exports, plus PNG, JPG and WebP raster files. Keep the complete symbol and its blank margins in the layout. Verify a printed sample at its intended size with a compatible scanner.

A downloaded barcode contains fixed data and has no built-in expiry date. Changing a saved value requires downloading and printing a new symbol; existing copies keep their original data. These Barcodes do not provide scan analytics or editable redirects. A connected inventory or checkout system may update its own record for the same identifier. For customer-facing web links with scan analytics, consider a URL QR code and QR code tracking.

Yes. A personal account and each non-Premium Workspace can create three Barcodes. Archiving a Barcode does not free a creation slot; Premium allows additional creations. Creating, editing or downloading a Barcode does not start the seven-day trial. The trial begins with the first dynamic QR code or Smart Link in that scope. The barcode itself retains its directly encoded value when a trial ends; it has no managed redirect to keep active.
